What Makes MAST@FIU Unique?

Updated: Apr 7, 2020

By Olivia Fortuna

Starting high school might be challenging, but MAST@FIU has multiple factors that separate it from others. These factors include, but are not limited to, MAST@FIU’s immense campus, exceptional library, direct access to the bay, and the small, family-like student body.

FIU's beautiful campus

Multi-Use Campus

One of the key features that makes MAST@FIU distinguishable from other schools is the campus. Students at MAST@FIU have access to all of FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus and have the privilege to access the food court, Glenn Hubert Library, events hosted by FIU, and the bay.

The food court at FIU provides meals from Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and much more. The book store provides school supplies, snacks, and drinks. It also supplies us with easy to make meals like ramen, wraps, or salads. Along with amenities found on campus, FIU regularly hosts events with a wide range of subjects. With themes including global warming and mental health awareness, these events reinforce the education MAST@FIU students receive in their classrooms.

The Glenn Hubert Library has a wide range of publications, from college-level books to comics. The three-story library provides resources for students who want to work in groups, borrow technology, or study independently. The library also allows students to rent rooms for individuals or groups to have the freedom to focus on their needs without interruptions from their surroundings. Students can speak freely on the first floor. The second floor is a “whisper floor”, leading to a quieter collaborative environment. Students also have access to desktop computers on this floor. The third floor is a no-speaking study zone complete with cubicles to allow students to work and study independently.

One of the most distinguishable features of the campus is that it is located right on Biscayne Bay. The bay allows us to learn about the marine world right at our fingertips. Students regularly participate in water-related activities such as seine netting and studying marine life first-hand.

Low-Quantity of Students, High-Quality People

Last but not least, the small quantity of students has a large impact on the relationships of students here at MAST@FIU. Our school may seem small in comparison to the traditional high school, but it is one of the many things that bring MAST@FIU students together. Without an overwhelming population, it’s easier to become closer and create meaningful connections with the people who surround you everyday. These deep connections is a significant reason why MAST@FIU feels like home.
