“Due to these unprecedented times....” is probably the most exhausted phrase of 2020. It’s been used to introduce drastic changes to people’s lives due to the pandemic. Whether it’s been used to tell you your internship has been canceled, a sporting event postponed, or a trip called off, it’s easy to recognize that COVID 19 has been wreaking havoc on our lives as we knew them.
As we near the end of the year and approach the holiday season, we first meet Thanksgiving, an American staple dedicated to celebrating the past year’s blessings. Embedded in the activities of the holiday itself is the very thing we usually celebrate- family. Many people travel to gather under one roof and participate in this yearly tradition.
This year, however, forced everyone to do things differently. With Dr. Facui and the CDC discouraging traveling to minimize the spread of COVID-19, typical Thanksgiving day customs were bent to fit the newfound reality of living through a pandemic. All of these constant changes can make it easy to lose focus on the whole scheme of this holiday- showing thankfulness and appreciating life itself. Although it might seem that 2020 brought nothing but twists and turns of disheartening events, it’s essential to remain grateful in times like these.
A handful of students at MAST shared what they were feeling thankful for on this holiday. Junior Alex Oved expressed gratitude for our school campus: “I’m thankful for our amazing campus on the bay. Being surrounded by nature is not something I take for granted. It’s a great place for a quick escape after school, to take in the sights by the water.” Another junior, Daniela Merino, told us she appreciated her best friend. “She keeps me sane, I’m so grateful to have met her here at school.” Sophomore Daniela Vasquez encapsulated a seemingly universal sense of gratitude felt by many during the Thanksgiving holiday. She stated, “I’m grateful for my family, friends, my education, and my future.”
