Off The Record with DJ Boof

Written by Joanna Mijares

On April 7th of 2020, FIU provided MAST@FIU students with the unforgettable experience of meeting and chatting with the world-renowned DJ Boof through Zoom.

With the restrictions imposed by social distancing, having a party with a famous DJ may sound farfetched or even made up. However, thanks to the efforts of the staff at FIU, students of the university and MAST@FIU alike were able to chat and party with DJ Boof on April 7th in real time through a Zoom call.

All About DJ Boof

If you’re a fan of pop music or rap, you’ve most likely heard of Nicki Minaj. But do you know of her famous disc jockey, DJ Boof?

The students of MAST@FIU got to know Boof quite well during the Zoom session, with the chat going wild and asking him questions about his life, career, and sneaker collection.

When asked how he made it big, DJ Boof detailed his humble beginnings. Boof was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and began steadily gaining popularity for his DJing skills through appearances at clubs and talent shows throughout the city. After deciding to “fake it ‘til he makes it”, DJ Boof bought a ton of fake jewelry and snuck into a nightclub during Usher’s release party for his album, Confessions. After lying that he was supposed to be DJing that night, he “rocked it”, and was approached by an array of celebrities with offers to work together.

This unique story is just one of many interesting tidbits about his life as a DJ that Boof shared with the viewers. DJ Boof’s life motto resonates with his success story quite a bit- “Why show up if you can’t show off?”

DJ Boof has known Nicki Minaj for over 12 years, since “she was just rapping in the streets” said Boof. He began working with Nicki after bumping into her a few years into their respective careers at the Wendy Williams talk show, where Boof also DJs. “She’s dope at what she does, I’m dope at what I do, we connected, and we just made it happen” said Boof about working with Nicki.

In case you’re wondering, DJ Boof is, in fact, a Barb.

Digital DJ

After the Zoom session Q&A with Boof, attendees hopped over to Instagram Live, where DJ Boof put on a live performance and hosted a virtual party. Viewers were gifted with a personal concert from DJ Boof where they were able to see him work up close, featuring classic party mixes like “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj and “Apple Bottom Jeans” By T Pain.

Seeing DJ Boof’s passion for DJing and hearing his life story was a very unique experience and was something distinctive to MAST@FIU thanks to our connections with FIU.
