For many students at MAST@FIU, the transition to a new, pandemic-influenced lifestyle took a toll on their mental health. From seeing your friends and leaving the house to go to school every day to staying indoors all day long and not being able to see anyone, students had to explore new ways to keep themselves sane in a new world. I asked students what activities they participated in during quarantine that helped them stay busy and healthy, both mentally and physically.
Senior Anissa Adams said she “took a strange liking to puzzles which took up most of [her] time. [She] also started running more often in the neighborhood to relieve [her] body of stress.” Running is claimed to improve physical and mental health significantly, making it an overall great activity.
Nicole Raz, junior, also “went on runs every morning. [She] also tried to go on evening bike rides as often as [she] could and played volleyball against a wall,” to remain safe and not have any unnecessary contact with people.
According to Mental Health America, exercising, like biking, is just one way for you to boost your mental health. Other tips they include are: establishing a sleep schedule, setting a time not to use electronics, spending time with animals, or going on daily walks. All of these activities can boost your mental health in different ways.
Keeping yourself healthy and balanced during this time is more important than ever, as most of us stay indoors much more than usual. If it’s on a bike ride or a short jog, make sure to keep your body and mind healthy.
