Community service has always been a vital part of many people’s lives. Especially during times like these, giving back to the community is crucial to reduce the chaos in the world today. Our school, MAST@FIU, values community service, whether it be through clubs or district-sponsored events. Multiple clubs at MAST@FIU have been putting loads of effort into creating opportunities for service events that our students will enjoy while also following social distancing rules.
Our Key Club chapter has organized many service events that many students enjoy, such as making cards for mail workers and writing kind messages on rocks for everyone to see. Fortunately, this club even had the chance to have an in-person service event at Oleta River State Park, where students helped clean different areas to show the true beauty of the nature we have here. Sofia Bohorquez, the president of our Key Club here at MAST@FIU, stated, “I was very happy to see everyone enjoying their time at the event, even though we had to remain socially distanced. I was shocked at how much trash we managed to pick up, but I’m glad we did so”. Students at this event worked in teams and scattered around the park to help clean the beautiful environment.
Another club, NHS, has also had many community service events with great turnouts. This club held an event in which students went on freerice.com and had the amazing opportunity to use their skills and knowledge to send rice grains to families who lack the money to obtain food. On this website, users have the chance to pick between different topics and answer various questions. Correct answers result in many grains of rice sent to people in need.
As is seen by the above examples, the clubs at our school are trying their best to come up with service events that will bring joy to both the students and the people in our community. Although times can be tough with all that’s going on, it is important to find ways to have fun with your community and maybe even help out in any way possible. Overall, the students here at MAST@FIU are working together and creating a community of their own online and are finding innovative ways to bring back happiness to those who have lost it during the pandemic.
